17 THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB. Ordinary Meeting, January 11th, 1890. THE 110th Ordinary Meeting was held in the Fitzgerald Room, Wanstead, at 7 o'clock, Mr. Walter Crouch, F.Z.S., Vice-President, in the chair.' Messrs. W. J. Bray and W. G. Wallace were elected members of the Club. Nominations of new members of Council and Officers for 1890 were made. Mr. Crouch exhibited a Palaeolithic implement formed from a piece of tabular flint, which had been found in gravel at Lake's Farm, Cannhall Lane, Wanstead, in 1889. Mr. Worthington Smith had seen the specimen and reported as follows : "This is an exceedingly good example of, I suppose, the latest type of Palaeolithic implements. You will observe that it is abraded on both sides, but it has probably not been moved far. It is not uncommon to find thin ovate imple- ments made from tabular pieces of flint. I have seen many from Warren Hill, Mildenhall, and others from Stoke Newington Common. But this somewhat oblong chisel-ended shape is rather uncommon." Mr. Crouch also exhibited a polished Neolithic Celt, found in the Alluvium at Earlham Grove, Forest Gate, in 1888, similar in form to the three specimens figured by Mr. Worthington Smith (in the Trans. : Essex Field Club, vol. , p. 146) as having been found at Temple Mills, Leyton, in 1882. Mr. Smith wrote : "This is a very good example. My three were pale buff in colour, and a little smaller than this one. Dr. John Evans has the three illustrated." Mr. Smith also remarked that a few years ago he found several good Palaeolithic implements in gravel on new roads at Wanstead. Mr. A. P. Wire threw upon the screen, by means of his oxy-hydrogen lantern, several photographs taken during the excursions of the Club last year, and also some views of Essex reproduced from old engravings. Mr. Crouch made some illustrative remarks upon the pictures. Prof. J. Logan Lobley, F.G.S., then read a paper entitled "The Inter-relations of the Field Naturalist's Knowledge," and afterwards made some very interest- ing explanations of a series of views 'and diagrams in illustration of his paper, which were thrown upon the screen by Mr. Wire. An interesting discussion on various points in Prof. Lobley's paper was carried on by Mr. Crouch, Mr. T. V. Holmes, Mr. White, Mr. D. W. Stable, Mr. Great- heed, and the author, and a cordial vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Lobley. Tea and coffee, &c., was served as usual at the end of the meeting. Ordinary and Annual General Meeting, Saturday, February 1st, 1890. The Tenth Annual General Meeting of the Club was held in the Public Hall, Loughton, Mr. E. A. Fitch, F.L.S., President, in the chair. Previous to the Annual Meeting, an Ordinary Meeting (the 111th) was held. Miss Annie Nutter and Messrs. A. Baxter and Alfred Warner were elected members. This meeting took the place of the one usually held in December, which was unavoidably postponed. C
