AS Shoebury Camp appeared to be at the end of its days even as
a mere outline, in 1879 I endeavoured to secure sufficient of
its dimensions as were still attainable so as to preserve some record
of so important a work. Except where the sea had washed it away,
it was possible to trace out continuously the outline, notwithstanding
