186 NOTES ON THE MOLLUSCA. Hygromia rufescens Clausilia rolphii ,, hispida Succinea putris Helicella caperata ,, elegans ,, itala Carychium minimum ,, carthusiana Limnaea truncatula Helicigona lapicida Pomatias elegans ,, arbustorum Acicula lineata Acanthinula aculeata Pisidium fontinale ,, lamellata ,, pusillum. Since there are no specimens forthcoming, the following thirteen species must for the present be rejected :— Vitrea cellaria Pupa muscorum Hygromia granulata Vertigo pygmaea Helicella cantiana Clausilia bidentata Helix aspersa Cochlicopa lubrica ,, hortensis Azeca tridens ,, nemoralis Caecilianella acicula Balea perversa. There are only three new records :— Vitrea nitida, Vertigo pusilla and Vertigo angustior. The most important species is, of course, Helicella carthusiana. Its range at the present time in this country is Kent and Sussex, and in the former county it does not occur north of the river Stour. That it formerly had a much larger area of distribution is proved by this occurrence, and by the fact that it has also been recorded from a Holocene deposit at Butley, near Orford, Suffolk. In all probability, the deposit [? Felstead, Ed.] is of of the same age as those at Chignal St. James, Roxwell and Shalford. RECENT SPECIES. The species living in the district at the present time which have been identified from Mr. French's specimens are sixty in number :— Vitrea crystallina Caecilianella acicula ,, alliaria Cochlicopa lubrica ,, glabra Succinea putris ,, nitidula. ,, elegans ,, pura Carychium minimum ,, radiatula Physa hypnorum ,, cellaria Limnaea stagnalis
