THE UREDINEAE AND USTILAGINEAAE OF ESSEX.
Melampsora orchidi-repentis Plowr.
The occurrence of a Melampsora on Salix repens was-
recorded from Tiptree Heath in the last list, and I now
have to notice the occurrence of the same species at
Galleywood growing in close proximity to the Caeoma
orchidis on Orchis maculata, the latter being the first form
of the Melampsora. This confirms the supposition that
the Melampsora from Tiptree belonged to this species.
Coleosporium senecionis Pers.
AE. On Pinus sylvestris, Chelmsford !
U. On † Senecio pulcher, Springfield !; and on cultivated
† Cineraria, Broomfield!
C. euphrasiae Schum.
U. On Melampyrum arvense, Fairstead (E. E. Turner);
on Euphrasia officinalis, Norton Heath !
USTILAGINEAE.
Ustilago longissima Sow.
On Glyceria aquatica, Chelmsford ! ; Springfield ! ;
Roxwell!
U. hypodytes, Schlecht.
On Agropyron repens, Tollesbury, where it is so common
that the boys draw out the affected sheaths to rap one
another over the knuckles with as they leave a blackish
mark (formed by the abundantly produced spores).
U. segetum Bull.
It is becoming recognised that the smuts of grain crops
are caused by different species of Ustilago, and that the
life histories of the organisms concerned show
variations in detail. The species hitherto grouped
under this name should apparently stand as follows :
*U. carbo Tul.
On Triticum vulgare, Writtle !
U. avenae Jens.
On A vena sativa, Writtle and Sutton !
*U. hordei, Kell. and Sw.
On Hordeum sativum, Writtle !
*U. flosculorum D.C.
On Scabiosa succisa, Loughton (T. Fetch).
