The irrelevance of these details in regard to wells in Fowlness was imperceptible in 1725, but it is hardly necessary to point out that in an intra- tidal area like Fowlness, where the sand below the surface-clay is permanently charged with sea-water, the rainfall which dilutes the contents of the ditches cannot in any way enhance the diffi- culties of sinking wells through the sand.
