THE ALIEN PLANTS OF ESSEX. 31 at Sandy Point, on 10/4/25. Oil was obviously the cause of their destruction. This is the only evidence I have obtained of the occurrence of this species on the coast. Coot (Fulica a. atra. L.). Identified during all months of visits, except January, November and December. At no time abundant, numbers varying considerably, the species being most in evidence in April. There are a number of highly suitable nesting places in the area, as at West Mersea, Broad Fleet (Mersea), Langenhoe, Fingringhoe and St. Osyth Marshes. Young were seen at Broad Fleet and St. Osyth Marsh. Other species identified : Jackdaw, Jay, Starling, Green- finch, Linnet, Chaffinch, House Sparrow, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Sky-Lark, Pied Wagtail, British Tree-Creeper, British Great Titmouse, British Blue Titmouse, Willow Warbler, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Fieldfare, Mistle Thrush, British Song Thrush, Redwing Black- bird, Nightingale, British Redbreast, British Hedge Sparrow, Wren, Swift, Green Woodpecker, Cuckoo, Kestrel, Mute Swan, Mallard, Wood Pigeon, Turtle Dove, Lapwing, Moorhen, Pheasant and Common Partridge. A NUMBER of records of Essex alien plants having been accumulated by other observers, it was thought desirable to include them in the present list, along with the results of my own work on the subject during the past twelve years. Most of these have been published in the reports of the British Botanical Society and Exchange Club at different times, and are believed to be new records for the stations in which they were observed, although not necessarily for the county. Mr. R. Melville has kindly given me permission to include his MS. notes of plants found by him in South Essex in 1926. The finders' names are shown in full in all cases ; the remainder are my own records. Dr. G. C. Druce has seen many of the Colchester aliens independently in the stations where I have observed them, and has seen all the critical plants from that area. The naming of
