32 THE ESSEX NATURALIST. many specimens would have been impossible without his kind assistance, and through him I am greatly indebted to the Conti- nental authorities, Drs. A. Thellung, Murr and Danser, and to Prof. Hackel, for the identification of plants of genera in which they specialize. The majority of the Colchester plants originate from refuse dumped on the Hythe Quay from the extensive maltings, and mostly show Mediterranean affinity. Others have doubtless arisen from sweepings from boats carrying cotton-seed, wood, and other commodities, and have also found congenial homes on the mud dredged from the tidal river Colne. Many of the plants therefore are not aliens in the strict sense of the word, but have been imported into their present stations by human agency. RANUNCULACEAE. Adonis annua L.
