EXCAVATIONS IN LOUGHTON CAMP, EPPING FOREST. 131 bed" was beginning to thin away) in area XVIII. This specimen certainly has every appearance of the same essential form, and the effects of a similar method of use, as the burin carene. In addition to specimen No. 7 another small chip from a polished axe, much burnt, was found in Loughton Camp in the lower part of the "Relic-bed" in area XVIII. 10. (1/1). Arrow-point made from a flake, found at the top of the "Relic-bed" in area XX., in black flint ; although it was only about 4 inches from the surface it remains unweathered. 11. (1/1). A somewhat rough flake, coarsely trimmed into an arrow-point shape : probably a discarded attempt to make an arrow-point. From the bleached sand forming the lower part of the inner bank, area XIX. 12. (1/1). Implement of sub-triangular form, with a comparatively large flake removed from one face (on the right in the figure) making a deep facet. In the latter respect it resembles the small discoidal forms that are generally classed as tortoise cores. Lower part of "Relic-bed," just at the foot of the rampart, area XXII. The side-edge view (shown in the drawing) is zig-zag, and the face on the left is markedly truncated. 13. (1/1 and x 5). A remarkably fine "saw," with finely serrated edges on either side. The cross-section, as shown in the drawing, is triangular, and, as is so frequently the case with this class of tool, it is somewhat thick. It would be impossible for implements of this kind to enter a cut, as the blade of a saw does with us. The saw-edges of the main drawing are not intended to be trusted in minute detail, but a middle portion of the edge was carefully drawn by a camera lucida on a scale of x 10 and then reduced 1/2 for reproduction; this shows the detail of the serration. In light grey flint, absolutely unweathered ; from the bleached sand of XIX. Another saw-edged flake was also found in the lower part of the "Relic-bed" in XX. 14. (1/1). Keen-edged ridged flake with diagonal working across one end. Bleached sand of XIX. 15. (1/1). A broken half of a thinner example of the same type. In the rampart, XXII. 16. (1/2). Thin flake with "squared" butt-end, and both the side-edges first trimmed and then blunted and smoothed by some form of grinding or friction. Found under the "Relic- bed," and resting on the surface of the lower slope of the ram-
