132 THE ESSEX NATURALIST. part, XXII. This is not so dull and fresh-looking as most of the flint work in this collection, but its bright surface appears to be due to prolonged handling during its use and not to weathering. 17. (1/1). A somewhat large example of the pygmy group, rather damaged by fire. "Relic-bed," XVIII. 18. (1/1). Part of a very beautiful pointed flake, without secondary trimming. "Relic bed," XXI. 19. (1/2). An exceptionally fine example of the simple horse-shoe scraper, with facetted striking platform. This specimen, like so many of the others, is made of fresh chalk flint of high quality, with thick white cortex. Lower part of "Relic- bed," XXII. 20. (1/2). This scraper is less successful in technique than the last, it is somewhat thick and shows unsatisfactory "steps" in the trimming of the edge. Lower part of "Relic-bed," XXIII. 21. (1/2). A beautiful little end-scraper, with delicate trimming, on a keen-edged blade ; the butt-end with the bulb broken away. Lower part of "Relic-bed," XXII. 22. (1/2). A beautiful horse-shoe scraper, much like the Brandon technique of to-day. Lower part of "Relic-bed," XX. 23. (1/2). Another good scraper, but with the working edge made by trimming away the bulbar end. Lower part of "Relic- bed," XXII. 24. (1/2). A good normal horse-shoe scraper. XIX. 25. (1/2). Another very good scraper, with the trimming extended down both side edges. This, like 19, has a well facetted striking platform. Bleached sand in the lower part of the rampart, XVI. 26. (1/2). Rather thick scraper, made of fresh black flint with thin cortex. Bleached sand of area XIX. 27. (1/2). Rather thick scraper, with fan flaking, of "duck- bill" form. Bleached sand of area XVI. 28. (1/2). Thin scraper, slightly damaged by fire. Middle of" Relic-bed," XXII. 29. (1/2). Double scraper, with a good deal of low-angle trimming on the inner face. Lower part of "Relic bed," XXIII. 30. (1/2). Scraper of oyster-shell, or unsymmetrical, form. Found under the present humus, that is, on the top of the "Relic-bed," XX.
