134 THE ESSEX NATURALIST. of the perfect form of the cone, flaked all round, was found in the Camp. Bleached sand, forming foundation of inner bank, XIX. 39. (1/2). This does not possess the conical form, but I regard it as being essentially the same kind of implement. This, is so little flaked that it could hardly be regarded as in any way a core, but it is very extensively worn at both ends, more par- ticularly the lower, near the arrows. Found in the same situation. as 38, and at 2 feet from the surface. 40. (1/2). Another sub-conical piece, with cortex at the back, similar to 38, but rougher. "Relic-bed," XVIII. 41. (1/2). The drawing shows only a cross-section through a poor example of a core, which is worked on both sides, as, indicated by the arrows. This drawing is intended to show the angles of the working, and the very unsatisfactory attempt on the right. Found in the main body of the rampart, XXIII. 42. (1/2). The outer face of a good broad flake, the cross- section being shown at 42a. Lower part of "Relic-bed," XVIII. 43. (1/2). A neat, small flake : this is brighter looking, than most, and is not of the usual fresh black flint. Found in the former surface soil, below the "Relic-bed," XX. Possibly of earlier date. 44. (1/2). Flake with secondary trimming down one side-edge. Lower part of "Relic-bed," XVIII. 45. (1/1). Slightly damaged barbed and stemmed arrow point. This is in my own collection. I found it some years ago washed out by the rain on the outer slope of the rampart a few yards to the east of the gap A. A few specimens from the Pillow Mounds at High Beach: are added for comparison with the Loughton Camp specimens. 46. (1/2). Small Thames pick, of which both faces, the side view, and the cross-section, are shown. The lower part of the view on the left shows the transverse, or tranchet, flake, which, is cut across the blade to sharpen the edge. In my own collection. Pillow Mounds. 47. (1/1 and x 5). Broken flint "saw"; the detail of the serrated edge being shown upon an enlarged scale at 47a. Found by Mr. W. H. Ryde. Pillow Mounds. 48. (1/1). Broken pygmy flint implement, with minute trimming on one edge. This is the "battered back" type. In my own collection. Pillow Mounds.
