138 THE ESSEX NATURALIST. century or two B.C. This is sufficient evidence to indicate the date of construction of the two camps. Mr. Hazzledine Warren obtained from the baked sand of Pillow Mound B at High Beach6 part of the shoulder and base of a vessel almost identical in quality with the liner ware repre- sented in the camps (fig. 4). Fig. 4. Fragments of High-Shouldered Pot from Pillow Mound B, High Beach, Essex, x 1/2. The colour is dark brown, and the paste fairly hard with a sparing amount of flint grit. The fragments are too small to give a useful reconstruction of the vessel, but, judging from pots found on other Early Iron Age sites, it was most likely a high- shouldered pot with thin rim. The height was at least 81/2 inches, maximum diameter 9 inches, and base diameter 41/4 inches. In conclusion, I wish to record my grateful thanks to Mr. Warren for the privilege of digging with him and allowing me to examine the pottery, and to Mr. R. A. Smith for his kind help. 6 Essex Naturalist, xxi. (1926). 220.
