The only published list of Essex spiders, so far as I know, is F. P. Smith's "Spiders of Epping Forest" (Essex Naturalist, 1902-4), and that unfortunately is incomplete, covering only the latter part of the above list from Salticus to the end. The species starred are not recorded by him. With one or two exceptions Smith used the nomenclature of Cambridge's "List of British and Irish Spiders," published in 1900. Since that date no comprehensive list of British spiders has appeared though more recent work has made many changes in his nomenclature necessary. The latest authoritative cata- logue is contained in the sixth volume of Simon's "Arachnides de France," of which three parts have appeared (in 1914, 1926 and 1929) and a fourth is in preparation. Only the first part, unfortunately, was published in Simon's lifetime; the second and third are manifestly not of the same value, and call for much amendment. To facilitate comparison with the Epping Forest list I have added the name used by Smith wherever it differs from that used by me. Beyond the bounds of his list I have similarly added the equivalent name in Cambridge's list of 1900. Recent Records of Salmon in the Thames Estuary. Mr. A. G. Linney, in his "Lure and Lore of London's River," records "During the first three months of 1932, a trio of salmon has been "reported as captured in the vicinity of Southend. I have made close "enquiry on the subject and the evidence cannot be doubted. The "first weighed rather more than two pounds and was taken by a "Westcliff angler; the second was smaller. Both were caught in the "month of January. On Good Friday a whitebait boat belonging to "Messrs. W. Young & Son of Leigh-on-Sea netted a seven-pounder "about midway between Southend Pier and the Knock Buoy."
