62 THE ESSEX NATURALIST Pardosa paludicola Clk. A male and two females in Pelgate Wood. A single female taken by me in 1900 at Parkhurst, Isle of Wight, and recorded by Pickard Cambridge, is the only other British record. No doubt iv has often been overlooked among P. amentata; in fact these Essex specimens were included in a tube of amentata which I happened to need for a special collection. Lycosa cuneata Clk. A single male in Pelgate Wood. The swollen tibia of the first pair of legs distinguishes this species at a glance. Lycosa trabalis Clk. One female, Pelgate Wood; a quite unexpected capture as the species is recorded from Devon only. It has not been figured in this country so I give a drawing of the epigyne. It may be noted that the dorsal cuticle (underneath the hairy clothing) is liberally sprinkled with small pale spots—a feature which does not appear in any description that I have seen. Euarcha arcuata Clk. Recorded in my last list for High Wood, Colchester, a single female : but in Pelgate Wood my colleague found a prosperous colony in a patch of grass and Luzula and he and his little daughter had a joyous time watching their acrobatics. Not far away I spied a male disporting himself on the stout stem of a bramble, a gorgeous spectacle in his livery of canary and black. Neon valentulus Falc. A single melanic female at the root of an oak-tree ; wholly black and iridescent. This is the second record of the species. Oxyptila maculosa sp. nov. Adult male, Pelgate Wood. Description and figure below. Xysticus bifasciatus K. Both sexes, Pelgate Wood ; mostly among the prostrate withered bracken. The dingiest specimens I have ever seen, though the male was a little brighter than the female. Philodromus reussii Bos. Philodromus constellatus Sim. These two belong to the aureolus confraternity. Dr. Roewer collates the females such as I took at Elmstead with males of which he figures the palpal tibia, but my tubes contained no such males. Philodromus collinus K. Here again I follow Dr. Roewer ; without his figures there would have been great difficulty in bringing the sexes together. My figures are drawn from Essex specimens. Philodromus albovittatus Bos. Like Bosenberg himself, I have the female only, a very handsome spider. Thanatus arenarius Thor. An adult female and several immature examples in Pelgate Wood. I give a drawing of the epigyne to certify the species. Echemus rhenanus Bertkau. Not recognised when taken and exact locality unknown, but within two miles of Elmstead. A Rhineland spider as the name indicates.
