at these stations excepting at the fifty-eighth milestone. Another
station given by Gibson is "opposite Ray's house at Black
Notley." Perhaps Ray saw it growing there and admired the
golden flowers lit up by the evening sun.
Many plants of this order are used medicinally and the Yellow
Figwort having a similar acrid scent may have been cultivated
by monks and herbalists. In this connection it is interesting to
record that it still grows among rubble near the Abbey Gardens
at Bury St. Edmunds.
