HERBARIA OF THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB 191 Smith, Mrs. No biographical details available. Mrs. Smith was of Petersfield, Hants. Herbarium of c. 600 sheets. This herbarium was presented to the Club by her sister, Miss F. E. Brent, of Ryde, Isle-of-Wight, in June, 1926. The specimens were collected over a long period of years and include many Exchange Club specimens. Tindal, Miss M. I. No biographical details available. Herbarium of c. 400 sheets which are described in the Essex Naturalist as "a collection of Phanerogams (1835)". These plants were collected widely in Great Britain, but a large proportion of them come from the Newmarket area. No mention of Miss Tindal appears in either the Suffolk or Cambridgeshire Floras, both of which were published since 1835. The history of this collection and how it came into the possession of the Club is now unknown. E.N. 16, 217, 1911. 2. THE SPECIAL HERBARIA The ALIEN Collection. This consists of some 500 sheets. Plants mainly from Essex and which do not appear in the British Museum's List of British Seed Plants and Ferns, 1907, according to which the General Herbarium is arranged. The greater part of this collection were found by members of the Club either on Field Meetings or individually. Many of the species are now so well naturalised in our County that they form an integral part of the flora of Essex and in any general revision of the herbarium these should be incorporated in their correct sequence. The CONIFER Collection. Herbarium of c. 339 species of Coniferae. The greater part of this collection was presented to the Club by the late Miss Gulielma Lister, F.L.S. The specimens were given in small instal- ments commencing in 1919 and continuing until shortly before her death in 1949. Many of the specimens are those used by her for the illustrations in Dallimore and Jackson's Handbook of Coniferae. These specimens are specially marked for easy reference. The ITALIAN Collection. A compound collection of c. 80 sheets of plants from Italy collected and presented at various dates by Club members, especially by Miss G. Lister, F.L.S., Miss Evelyn Munro, Percy Gr. Thompson, F.L.S., and also including some sheets from the Powell and Sewell herbaria from the same country, E.N., 22, 171, 1927. The SEED Collection. This consists of the seeds and where appropriate the seed heads or capsules of some 500 species of British plants. They are stored in various sizes of boxes according to the needs of each species. This collection was largely the work of Percy G. Thompson, F.L.S., assisted by various Club members. The MOSS Collection. A compound collection of c. 750 sheets of British Mosses. This collection includes the sound specimens from the Varenne collection together with a number of mosses presented to the Club by W. R. Sherrin, Esq., Miss G. Lister, Percy G. Thompson and other (Tub members. The SWISS Collection. A compound collection of c. 250 sheets of plants from Switzerland collected and presented at various dates by Club members, especially hy Miss G. Lister, F.L.S., Dr. F. M. Turner and Percy G. Thompson, F.L.S. Also includes some sheets from the Powell herbarium. The SWISS Loan Collection. A compound collection consisting of 190 species mounted on 40 sheets which are available for loan to students. No details of the origin of this collection are available. The following individual herbaria are stored and kept apart from the remainder.
