HERBARIA OF THE ESSEX FIELD CLUB 193 Forster, Benjamin Meggot: b. Walbrook, London, 16 January, 1764; d. Hale End, Walthamstow, 8 March, 1829. Herbarium of 106 sheets of plants made in Walthamstow, Essex. The Club is also the possessor of his annotated copy of Warner's Plantes Woodfordienses so that it is possible to compare his annotations with the actual specimens he collected. Forster was a brother of Edward Forster, whose portrait hangs in the rooms of the Linnean Society of London of which body he was Treasurer. E.N., 19, 72, 1920. Freeman, John; b. Chipperfield, Herts, 1784; d. Stratford. Essex, 1864. Schoolmaster, he became assistant to Dr. Newman at his school at Bromley-by-Bow and subsequently at Stratford, afterwards becoming proprietor of the latter, a well-known educational establishment opposite the present Passmore Edwards Museum. He was also examiner in Hebrew, Chaldee and Syriac to the students of Stepney College. A close friend of J. A. Brewer, author of the Flora of Reigate, and, as a cousin of the wife of F. E. Hulme, F.L.S., he was well known to the scientific men of his day, as both a botanist and astronomer. Herbarium of 50 sheets of British plants bound in one volume described as a "Hortus Siccus" and is dated April 21st, 1808. Unfortunately no localities are given. Wrote the Stratford Flora (1862) a copy of which accompanies the herbarium. Contributed to Flora of Essex and also read a paper to the Botanical Society of London on "Hints on describing species". Herbarium of 216 sheets bound in one volume, made between 1832 and 1837. Majority of the specimens from Essex. Proc. Bot. Soc. London, 1, 48, 1839. Correspondence stored with the herbarium. Herbarium of "Plants Illustrating the 'Stratford Flora'", and con- sisting of 50 sheets from Stratford; 35 sheets from Wanstead, Leytonstone, Plaistow and East Ham and 16 sheets from Woodford. The foregoing herbaria of the Freemans (pater et fils) were kindly presented to the Club by Mr. W. H. Freeman on the 12th February, 1919. Mr. W. H. Freeman was the son of Joseph Freeman and grandson of John Freeman. E.N., 19, 23, 1919. Hounsome, Mr. No biographical details available. Collection of 60 sheets bound in two volumes of 30 sheets each of North American plants. This collection is undated and many of the plants are not named, but full details of localities are given.
