NAZEING STAGE (PLEISTOCENE) 37 Fig. 1 shows the area of the works and the parts which were included in the earlier report [cf. ibid p. 37, Fig. 3]. In addition there are three new sections :— a. A deep trench (GH) for the construction of a culvert, b. A rectangular excavation to the east of this, c. An excavation which provided a section (JK) parallel to, and 100 ft, south of the line AD of the earlier report. Fig. 1. The area of Deephams Sewage Works giving the location of the sections described. The dotted lines AD, BC, EF relate to the sections des- cribed in the author's 1957 paper. The other lines relate to this paper. a. The trench. This was cut in a roughly north-south direction shown to 18.00.OD. It extends close to the line already explored by boreholes [Hayward, 1957, p. 36] and therefore provided an opportunity for finding the relationship between the deep channel already reported and the beds of the Nazeing Stage. Deposits of the "M" type have already been described [ibid. p. 38 seq.]. In this trench, some 500ft. to the east, these were absent but the excavation proved deposits of the "D" sub-stage for the first time in this site. These consisted of a variable series of grey silty clays, with plant fibres passing
