132 THE ESSEX NATURALIST REPORTS OF MEETINGS Ordinary Meeting (1,004th Meeting) SATURDAY, 26 JANUARY, 1957 Held at the West Ham College of Technology, this meeting was attended by 23 persons and the chair was taken by the President, Mr. E. E. Syms. The following were elected to membership of the Club:— Mr. D. W. R. Frone, of 43, Algers Road, Loughton, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Graver, of 65, Danehurst Gardens, Ilford, Mr. P. J. Grubb, of 11, Elmhurst Drive, Hornchurch, Mrs. Chris. McLaughlin, of 15, Pembridge Villas, London, W.11, Mr. E. M. Payne, of 8, Hill Top, Loughton, Mr. B. St. G. K. Taylor, of 126, Felbrigge Road, Goodmayes. Mr. John Belcher showed herbarium specimens and a microscope slide of red algae of the genus Batrachospermum. He stated that he had recorded it only from one locality in the area and requested members to advise him if they came across it growing in fresh water. Mr. John Homes, M.A., then gave a lecture on The Incidence of Poverty in Essex. His talk was based mainly upon 17th and 18th century parish records of the Overseers of the Poor. He exhibited several such records and after his lecture several of the members present took part in a discussion on some of the points raised. At 4.45 p.m. a vote of thanks to Mr. Homes was carried by acclamation and the members went down to tea.
