REPORTS OP MEETINGS 135 (Hedw.) Brid., Bryum capillare Hedw. and B. argenteum Hedw. were encountered growing on one of the concrete slabs which were laid during the war as gun-sites. On the way to Langdon Hills, a brief visit was made to Bulphan, where the vicar, the Rev. A. Nelson-Walker, kindly showed the party over the parish church of St. Mary. Of especial interest was the timber work of the tower, porch and screen. A moderately good growth of saxicolous lichens was observed on the gravestones and church walls; the more conspicuous species included: — Lecanora galactina var. dispersa (Pers.) Ach. Caloplaca citrina (Hoffm.) Th. Fr. Placodium callopismum (Ach.) Mer. Candelariella vitellina (Ehrh.) Mull. Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. Physcia grisea (Lam.) Zahlbr. Lunch was taken on One-Tree Hill from which the party enjoyed a panoramic view of the Thames estuary from Southend pier to Tilbury and over to the North Downs. After lunch and some leisurely exploration of the hill and its environs, the party was conveyed the short distance to Langdon Hills. Here most mem- bers voted to visit the small sixteenth century church of St. Mary the Virgin and All Saints, whilst the rest spent the time examining the bryophytes grow- ing in the rather damp woodlands. One additional moss, Dicranoweisia cirrata (Hedw.) Lindb., was encountered growing on some of the tree-trunks and branches. The coach arrived at Horndon-on-the-Hill in good time before tea to enable members to visit the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, where again, the timber work was of outstanding interest. Tea was taken at 'The Bell'. After tea a short meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Presi- dent. Mr. Pettifer commented on the mosses seen during the day, and Dr. Alvin on the lichens. There followed a short discussion on the biology of these plants and their status in the county. Mr. Marshall provided some interesting thoughts on some of the constructional features of the churches seen during the day. BRYOPHYTA FROM HART'S WOOD, NEAR BRENTWOOD. Sphagnum pumulosum Roll.
