MARINE BIOLOGY AT SKIPPER'S ISLAND 253 "gribble", Limnoria lignorum (Rathke), the last having almost removed all wood from the piles of the dam. The two cirripedes, Balanus balanoides (L.) and Elminius modestus Darwin, are present but the latter dominates the habitat, covering stones, piles and seaweed. Three tunicates have been found, all in fair quantity. Ascidiella aspersa (O. F. Muller) on the piles and, on the fucoids, the "golden stars" sea squirt Botryllus schlosseri (Pallas) and the pink and less regular Botrylloides leachii (Savigny). The following fish have been netted from the dam or in its vicinity. Numbers of a small goby, Gobius microps Kroyer; and single specimens of the following: the "father lasher", Cottus bubalis Euphrasen; a small specimen of the "Great Pipe-fish", Syngnathus acus L.; the "butterfish", Pholis gunnellus (L.); a very small flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.); and a large vivipar- ous blenny, Zoarces viviparus L. There are many gaps in this record. No doubt some will be filled by repeated visits to the island. However, this small site must be treated with care. So far as we know at present there is no other habitat quite like the dam within our area. Acknowledgments My thanks are due, as indeed are those of all our Recorders, to our President and owner of the island, Mr. E. F. Williams, F.R.E.S., F.Z.S. He has given us the freedom of the island, supplied the food and often the transport necessary for this investigation. Thanks are also due to Prof. J. McCunn, F.R.C.S., Dept. of Anatomy, Royal Veterinary College, London, for the use of Departmental facilities in the furtherance of this investigation. Reference Stephenson, T. A. (1935).
