Wheeler then gave a brief note on two mammals, the Wild Cat and Dormouse. Both these communications were illustrated by colour slides. The main business of the meeting was to hear a lecture by Mr. H. R. Tutt, J.P., M.B.O.U., entitled "Wild Life in the Bush round Deep River, Ontario". This proved to be a delightful account of Mr. Tutt's recent journey through this undeveloped part of Canada, illustrated by numbers of colour photographs of birds, plants, insects and local scenery. At the conclusion of his talk the President thanked Mr. Tutt on behalf of the Club and the meeting adjourned to tea. Book Review Trees and Shrubs in Wood and Hedgerow. By Helge Vedel and Johan Lange. Translated by C. H. R. Hillman; adapted by H. L. Edlin. 224 pages. 1960. Published by Methuen. Price: 16/-. Recently there has been a spate of books on the identification of trees and shrubs, but this little volume provides a very welcome addition. Its aim, as stated in the introduction, is to be a practical handbook for the country lover and forester alike. Originally published in Denmark, but most ably translated, Dr. Edlin has adapted it to suit British con- ditions. The keys enable the reader to identify the tree or shrub by its leaves or related characters. Nearly 100 pages of pleasant, coloured plates illustrate 120 different plants and there are over 400 separate sketches. Also included are accounts of wood structure, tree nutrition, habitat, ecology, utilisation, forestry development and maps showing places of origin. The reviewer gave his copy to some elementary Biology pupils who were able to identify several trees previously unknown to them with no other help than the book's keys. The professional Botanist has many more complete volumes, but amateurs, awed by the seeming profusion of species would find this book of use. Its low price is remarkable. W. M. Y. Recorders In Part 5 of the Essex Naturalist it is intended to publish some pre- liminary reports from the Recorders in the subjects detailed on cover ii. For this reason it has been decided to omit several of the regular contributions on Birds, Lepidoptera, etc., and also some of the Species- lists from the Reports of Outdoor Meetings.
