338 THE ESSEX NATURALIST Other uncommon species which were seen near here include: Phascum curvicollum Hedw., Pottia recta (Sm.) Mitt., Barbula revoluta Brid., Scleropodium illicebrum (Hedw.) B. & S., and Rhynchostegiella pallidirostra (A. Br.) Loeske with capsules, all these from Audley End. Encalypta vulgaris Hedw., from railway embankment at Littlebury, Pottia lanceolata (Hedw.) C.M., from chalk near Chrishall Church, and the liverwort, Sphaerocarpos michelii Bellardi from stubble field near Peyton Hall. Further south in the gravel pit regions around Fishers Green at Waltham Abbey some well established colonies of Bryum pallens (Brid.) Rohl, Bryum affine (Bruch.) F. Schultz, and Bryum pseudotriquetrum (Hedw.) Schwaegr, var. bimum (Brid.) Richards & Wallace were seen, all these occurring on both sides of the boundary between Essex (v.c. 19) and Hertfordshire (v.c. 20), the boundary here being the course of the old River Lea. Another interesting record was the finding at Epping Long Green of Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. with capsules. This is uncommon and apparently occurs after a dry summer when the plant is no longer submerged in water. It is also of interest to note that during 1959 Dr. H. L. K. Whitehouse of Cambridge made an examination of the collection, dated, 1874, of F. Y. Brocas in the Saffron Walden herbarium and due to some errors of identification several species have been added to the Essex list and a few have been deleted.
