Dromius melanocephalus Dej. (1), (2) and (3), common, at grass
roots in shore refuse, etc.
Dytiscidae
Agabus bipustulatus (L.) (3), 1 ex. in the pond, iii.60.
Colymbetes fuscus (L.) A pair of elytra of this species were
recognisable among beetle remains from heron pellets found
on (3), iii.60.
Dytiscus circumflexus F. Recognisable remains from heron
pellets (3), iii.60.
These last two species may occur in the ponds on Skippers
Island.
Hydrophilidae
Octhebius marinus (Payk.) (3), 2 ex. at grass roots beside the
pond, iii.60. This is a characteristic brackish water species.
Octhebius viridis Peyron (3), 1 ex. at grass roots beside the pond,
iii.60. Another brackish-water species, and is not recorded
for North Essex by Balfour-Browne (1958).

Proteinus brachypterus (F.) (2), 1 ex. under dead bird, iv.61.
Carpelimus foveolatus Sahl. (3), 1 ex. from beside the pond, iii.60.
A rare species but previously recorded for "Essex Coast".
Oxytelus rugosus (F.) (1) and (3), fairly common.
Oxytelus sculpturatus Grav. (3), ix.59, iii.60.
Stenus clavicornis (Scop.) (2) and (3), grass roots, sweeping
herbage, and in shore refuse, fairly common.
Stenus aceris Steph. (3), 1 ex. by sweeping herbage, iv.61.
Paederus litoralis Grav. (1), iii.60, iv.61.
Astenus longelytratus Palm (2), 1 ex. at grass roots, iii.60.
Xantholinus linearis (Ol.) (1) and (2), at grass roots.
