Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperanthus). From July 11 to August; very common and widespread. Nymphalidae Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta). From May 10 to August; seven from Colchester, East Mersea, Little Clacton, St. Osyth, Walton, West Bergholt and Weeley; unusually scarce in 1963. Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui). From May 25 to August; seven from Colchester, East Mersea, Little Clacton, St. Osyth, Weeley and Walton. Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae). From March 24 to October; widespread and abundant, especially in July. Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros). Reported from Wakes Colne and Witham in 1962. Peacock (Nymphalis io). From April 9 to September; wide- spread; abundant in August; one individual in flight indoors in December. Comma (Polygonia c-album). From April 19 to October; very common; from Bures Hamlet, Colchester, Little Clacton, Thorpe and Weeley. White Admiral (Limeitis camilla). Reported from Colchester and Great Bentley. Lycaenidae Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus). From June 6 to August; common and widespread. Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus). From May 26 to August; four from Colchester. Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas). Common and widespread from May to September. Green Hairstreak (Callophrys rubi). Reported from Colchester. Purple Hairstreak (Thecla quercus). Reported from Colchester and Fingringhoe. White-letter Hairstreak (Strymon w-album). One from Weeley on August 1; colonies known to exist at Colchester, Coggeshall and West Bergholt. Pieridae Large White (Pieris brassicae). From April 6 to September; wide- spread and abundant.
