NOTES ON THE MAMMALS OF ESSEX 187 Fin Whale: Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus). A Fin Whale stranded at Brightlingsea on 30 September 1962, and 41 ft. long, has the distinction of being the largest whale re- corded from the coast of Great Britain during 1962. Cetacea are not infrequently reported from the Essex coast, and full details are kept at the British Museum (Natural History). Grateful acknowledgment is made to Dr. F. C. Fraser of the British Museum (Natural History) for permission to reproduce the above records for 1962. Acknowledgments Thanks are due to all who have in any way contributed to these notes, especially H. V. Thompson, of the Ministry of Agri- culture, Guildford, Surrey, and R. H. Davis, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Surbiton, Surrey, and to all those landowners and farmers who have allowed trapping and observation to be carried out on their land. In particular, gratitude is recorded to Colonel and Mrs. P. V. Upton of Coptfold Hall, Margaretting, for their kind co-operation in providing valuable facilities for mammal studies.
