20 THE ESSEX NATURALIST Phylum NEMERTINI Class ANOPLA Order Heteronemertini LINEIDAE Lineus gracilis Johnson In mud on the banks of the Colne just below Brightlingsea Creek (Sorby, 1903). Lineus obscurus Desor Collected near East Mersea Stone (Sorby, 1903). Class ENOPLA Order Hoplonemertini Amphiporidae Amphipoms lactifloreus (Johnson) One specimen in sand from the Bradwell Shore (29.5.1963) was identified as this species. Many other nemertines were collected in littoral and benthic samples. Phylum ANNELIDA Class POLYCHAETA Aphroditedae Aphrodite aculeata Linne Recorded from the Blackwater at Osea Island in 1888 (Cole) but now only common in off-shore waters, several being taken in dredge hauls at Swire Hole in July 1962 and June 1965. Mostly on sand and mud bottoms. Lepidonotus squamatus (Linne) Very common in mud and shell on the lower shore and sub- littorally from Osea Island seawards. Lepidonotus clava (Montagu) Occurring with the last mentioned and may be equally com- mon. This is normally considered to be a southern or western species in the British Isles. Gattyana cirrosa (Pallas) One or two specimens only from the Bradwell shore in September 1958 and January 1960. Harmothoe imbricata (Linne) One specimen only under stone on the Bradwell shore (11.6.63). Harmothoe impar (Johnston) On the lower shore and in bottom samples. Generally distri- buted but not common. Harmothoe longisetis (Grube) One record only, from Line 2a.St.4 (10.9.60).
