32 THE ESSEX NATURALIST Talitridae Talitrus saltator (Montagu) Very common in the sand and under litter at high water mark on the beaches at Bradwell, Mersea Flat and Colne Point. Orchestia gammarella (Pallas) Common under litter at high water mark on beaches and in saltings, Osea Island and Bradwell Creek. Aoridae Aora typica Krøyer Occasionally taken in bottom samples. Recorded from stations S.5, Line 1.4, and Line 2a.5 in 1960. Photidae Photis sp. One record only, of a juvenile, in 1962. Jassidae Jassa falcata (Montagu) Abundant in the fouling on ships anchored in the Blackwater in 1960, but also collected from the benthos at station N.l in 1960. Corophiidae Corophium volutator (Pallas) Common. Taken on muddy bottoms from Maldon seawards to the Knoll Buoy. Corophium crassicorne Bruzelius Abundant in the fouling on ships anchored in the Blackwater (May 1960). Corophium bonelli G. O. Sars Only recorded from the mud of Bradwell Creek. Caprellidae Pariambus typicus Krøyer Commensal with Asterias rubens, being found in large numbers between the tube feet. Generally common, particularly among Asterias living along the south side of the Blackwater in 1960 and elsewhere in 1965. Caprella linearis (Linne) Very common on hydroids and sponges on the bottom at Thirslet and other clean areas. Also recorded from the lower shore, fouling on ships and in plankton samples. Some other species of Caprella may have been confused with C. linearis and included in these records.
