BOOK NOTICES 81 Advice is here given on how to choose and use binoculars, hides, refer- ence books, notebooks and maps, and the first steps in identification of bird. There is also information on the care of sick birds, setting up a bird sanctuary (the construction of nesting boxes being most valuable). Sug- gestions on projects to undertake in connection with field studies are also included and will, no doubt, inspire many newcomers to ambitious schemes, alas mostly abortive, such being human nature. A list of reserves, observatories, field centres and natural history museums is also given, but this is so selective as to be of relatively little value. For Essex, four museums, Hatfield Forest, Hales Wood. Abberton Reservoir, Bradwell Observatory and the High Beach Field Study Centre. No Lea Valley Reservoirs, the Naze, Walton backwaters, Epping Forest or Romford Ringing Station! Alwyne Wheeler.
