GRID REFERENCE GAZETTEER 143 Grid Reference Gazetteer to Essex Place Names and Localities mentioned in the Flora By K. J. Adams & J. M. Adams The gazetteer is intended to be an aid to the finding of place names on relevant Ordnance Survey sheets rather than an accurate record of the precise localities for Essex bryophytes. Few of the locations are known with sufficient accuracy to provide a definite containing reference for an area smaller than a 10 kilometre square, but where these are known for certain the 1 kilometre square reference is placed in parentheses. Wherever possible references are given at the 1 km sq. level and are selected to facilitate the finding of place names as printed on the 1" Ordnance Survey maps, 7 th series. In certain cases, indicated individually, these can only be found on 21/2" maps or 6" plans. Where names have changed this has been indicated as far as possible. The modern equivalents of old names for the Walthamstow area have been listed and can be found in the 'A to Z' London Atlas & Street Index or on O.S. 6" plans. A separate section is devoted to 'Epping Forest and surrounding area'; most of the names referred to can be found on the maps in Brimble's (1950) book. Certain localities, e.g., 'Kelvedon', 'nr. Chelms- ford' and 'Southend', etc. are known to include a considerable area around the town of mention and can only be reliably con- tained by a 5 or, in some cases, a 10 km sq. reference; such cases are followed by a small v to indicate their vague definition. All the km sq. references are shown plotted on a map of the county (fig. 1) to give some indication of the areas that have received attention from bryologists over the years. It is apparent that the south east two-thirds of v.c. 18, the coastal strip, and the area east of Colchester are very much underworked. Although there appears to be some correlation between the distribution of collecting sites and the density of woodland, as might be expected in such a dry county, there is a distinct scatter on either side of the main London to Colchester line of communication, with local clusters around the home towns of bryologists, such as Brocas and Varenne.
