156 THE ESSEX NATURALIST Notes on the Butterflies of Hawkswood By D. Corke (Biology Department, West Ham College of Technology) These notes are the result of fairly regular observations on butterflies in Hawkswood, a part of Epping Forest within the parish of Chingford, carried out between 1952 and 1967. The observations were made casually, on walks in the Forest, but since the area is fairly small and was visited very frequently (rarely less often than once a week) these observations are probably sufficient to give a summary of what has happened to the butter- fly populations of the area. The study area is shown in the map below. Area 1 is woodland dominated by Oak (Quercus spp.) and Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus Linn.) with an undergrowth of Bramble (Rubus sp.).
