100 THE ESSEX NATURALIST H. hybridus Loew VC 18, 19. Fairly common throughout Essex, and certainly more often seen and more widespread than trivittatus, though according to Chandler (1969) the reverse is true in Kent. Taken at flowers of Crataegus monogyna, Rubus fruticosus agg., Aster tripolium, Inula crithmoides and /. helenium. H. frutetorum F. VC 18. Mucking, on ivy leaves on an old wall, 14 June 1970; Langdon Hills, 30 June 1972 (G. Glombek); Danbury, Backwarden Reserve, males feeding at bramble flowers 15 July 1972; Eastwood, 10 June-23 June 1973 (E. T. Levy). H. versicolor F. VC 18, 19. Widespread though not common. Observed feeding at flowers of Heracleum sphondylium. H. lineatus F. VC 18, 19. Apparently more local in its Essex distribution than versi- color. Colchester, 1913 (Harwood, in HD); Epping Forest, many records, 1914-1965; Ongar, feeding at Heracleum sphondylium 7 July 1963; Hadleigh Marshes, flying low over a ditch 17 June 1970 and on Ranunculus repens flower 19 June 1971; Bicknacre, Thrift Wood Reserve, 31 July 1971; Stanford-le-Hope, 23 June 1972 (G. Adams, in BM); Paglesham, on Bulrush leaf in old gravel pit 18 June 1970; Stanford-le-Hope, 23 June 1972 (G. Glombek); Mucking, on flowers of Heracleum sphondylium near gravel pits 24 June 1972; Rayleigh, 24 June 1972 (E. T. Levy). Xylota lenta Mg. VC 18, 19. A rare fly of old-established woodlands. There are several of the Harwoods' specimens from Colchester High Woods in BM and HD, taken over the period from 1897 to 18 June 1927, and A. A. Allen (1965) has recorded the species from Epping Forest. In a letter, Allen tells me that the origin of his record published in 1965 was a single specimen seen in the Forest in early June 1941, in company with H. W. Forster of Chingford, who at the time gave him the impression that lenta was a known Epping Forest insect. X. sylvarum L. VC 18, 19. A rather local woodland fly. Colchester, 1894-1910 (Har- wood, in HD); Epping Forest, several records 1934-1963; Thorndon Park, 24 July 1965; Bicknacre, Thrift Wood Reserve, 31 July 1971; Hockley Woods, 13 July 1972 (E. T. Levy).
