Snelling 8 Kennet Close, Cranham, Essex Introduction In the early 1960s the removal of the drift cover from the surface of the chalk in the pit known as Greenlands (Grid reference TQ 568785) situated on the north side of the Purfleet By-Pass (A.126) led to the exposure of a section containing rich shell beds. I collected samples from all levels during early 1965 and these were analysed by the late Mr C. P. Castell of the Department of Palaeontology, British Museum (Natural History), South Kensington, S.W.7. The purpose of this short paper is to describe the section and its fauna. Description of the Exposure The surface deposits exposed in the pit are part of a spread described by the Geological Survey at Taplow Gravel (Fig. 1), but it is clear, how- Figure 1
