Appendix. ix The amounts contributed authorising such a step, the work was com- menced on October 13th last, and was continued from day to day until November 10th. The works were under the control of Mr. T. V. Holmes and Mr. W. Cole, who were on the spot during the entire period. Valuable aid was also afforded by Mr. R. M. Christy, Mr. H. A. Cole, and Mr. E. T. Newton. A first report was read before the Club on November 29th, and the results were such as to encourage the Committee to persevere in what is allowed to be a very difficult, although a deeply interesting, research. The Society of Antiquaries has made a grant of £5 towards the expenses, and, after paying all cost incurred during the month's explorations, the Committee has in hand, or promised, a sum of about £30. It is estimated that nearly £50 will be required for another month's work in the pits, and contributions are earnestly solicited to enable the Committee to recommence in the spring. The full
