THE DATING OF CLAY-PIPES 31 Yarmouth: T. PAGE .................... 1812-1831 I. TAYLOR .................. 1844-1853 I. HARPLEY ................ 1796 onwards Bury St. Edmunds: S. JENNINGS .......... 1902 London (Highgate): John HARRISON ............ 1902 St. Albans: Geo. KIFF .................. 1902 Broseley: W. SOUTHORN .............. to 1961 (still active) It will be seen that all the earlier pipemakers have been grouped in the above lists into twenty-year periods: that is not to say that none of them made pipes a few years on either side of the limiting dates, but with other evidence giving a date to a pipe in the appropriate quarter-century, it should be possible to get a little nearer still if it bears initials of a maker listed above, or at least to confirm the dating in those cases (unfortunately frequent) where many makers used the same initials about the same time. In order to avoid having to look through the whole of the above chronological groups to find the probable period of any given pair of initials from a pipe, the foregoing initials and names have been combined and rearranged alphabetically for ready reference in the table on pp. 32 and 33. Do not be disappointed if no marks reward your careful scrutiny of foot, bowl and stem: less than ten per cent of clay- pipes will be found to be marked so that their makers could be identified.
