28 THE MAMMALS, REPTILES, AND FISHES OF ESSEX. The following list may, I think, be relied on: Fishes of the River Stour. 1. Perch, Perca fluviatilis. 2. Miller's Thumb, Cottus gobio. 3. Stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus. 4. Ten-spined Stickleback, Gasterosteus pungitius. 5. Trout, Salmo fario. 6. Pike, Esox lucius. 7. Carp, Cyprinus carpio. 8. Gudgeon, Gobio fluviatilis. 9. Roach, Leuciscus rutilis. 10. Dace, Leuciscus vulgaris. 11. Rudd, Leuciscus erythrophthalmus. 12. Minnow, Leuciscus phoxinus. 13. Tench, Tinca vulgaris. 14. Bream, Abramis brama. 15. Bream-flat, Abramis blicca. 16. Loach, Nemacheilus barbatula. 17. Eel, Anguilla vulgaris. 18. Wels, Silurus glanis. The River Cam rises in the north-west corner of the county, but it soon leaves our district. Unfortu- nately, I have been quite unable to get any list or speci- mens of the fish of the Essex portion of this river, This is the more to be regretted, as, in some part of its course, it holds two species, apparently naturally absent from all the rest of our Essex rivers ; and, for aught I know to the contrary, they ought perhaps to appear as members of our Fauna. These two species are the Grayling, lately introduced into the Lea, and the Spined Loach.
