The station is manned around the clock by a total staff of seventy-five for, should all the pumps fail, the lower parts of the metropolis, such as the Isle of Dogs, would start to flood within an hour. There are plans afoot to build a new station to replace the three existing engine houses, but there are firm hopes that Bazalgette's masterpiece will be preserved for posterity, perhaps as a centre of Industrial Archaeology. (Andrew Snelling) March 12th. Geology. Group Annual General Meeting. The Geology Group marked its tenth anniversary by a number of special items at the A.G.M. held on March 12th. at the Brentwood School. After conclusion of the formal business, which included election of Mr. J.M. Branson to the office of Permanent Vice Chairman, in recognition of his sterling services to the Group, the Chairman introduced the subject of a proposed presentation to our Hon. Sec. Ron Coates. The presentation was to honour the completion by our Secretary of ten years of office, and a selection of the many goodwill messages received during collection of the where withall was read out at the meeting. Letters came from a large number of absent friends whose locations ranged from Australia via Norwich to Redditch. Our President, Roy Masefield, then delivered a tape recorded message from Mr. Branson, a founder member, who recalled the early days of the Group, and paid a well- deserved tribute to Ron, referring to the great effort spent in serving the members over the years.
