A POINT OF VIEW The Essex Field Club is, in my opinion, well qualified to hold the title for being the premier Natural History Society in the county. Its aims and ideals have stood well the test of its 91 years of existence, and under its dedicated and erudite administration, the membership enjoys a wide and varied programme of activities. Despite this proud claim, the membership is drawn principally from within the metropolitan area, with Stratford as the base for meeting and business. However, faced with the processes of urban renewal and a rising population in the county, more aware these days of their natural heritage, the need for the club to base itself further within the county could be deemed desirable. The positional advantages that once obtained at Stratford are now to be found at Ilford or Romford, and a carefully phased move would serve to make the club more attractive to those living further afield without unduly inconveniencing the main body of the membership. It would be hoped that such a progress might be welcomed by many and help to strengthen the membership figures. Kevin Byrne may have a good point here, and I should welcome any correspondence, for or against, for publication in the next issue.) ************ DEFENDERS OF ESSEX ASSOCIATION A new organisation, The Defenders of Essex, has been formed, widening the scope of the Action Committee against Foulness Airport into a nation-wide movement.
