Page -33- Meetings Report. Mammal Group Meeting to Running Water Wood. Belhus Park near Aveley. 14th July. 1974. Leader - Ron Allen. Fifty Longworth Small Mammal Traps having been set the previous evening the party were able to examine the catch. A woodmouse (Apodemus sylvatious) was caught in bramble on a ditch side adjacent to arable farmland. Three bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) were caught in bramble and nettle undergrowth in birch and hazel coppice and a common shrew (Sorex araneus) was found in a barley crop about 4m outside the Wood. We then rambled through the woodland and David Corke pointed out features of mammal interest. A badger sett was visited and while rabbits were obviously in residence evidence of badger activities was inconclusive. Our thanks to David Corke for providing the Traps, David Scott for collecting them and Peter Verden for assistance with setting them. After meeting it Rainham Station a party of about 17 members proceeded down Ferry Lane, then left in front of the Murex works to park at the entrance to the refuse dump. Very little of Rainham Marsh exists today, we
