3. OBITUARY THOMAS HENRY CHARLES BARTROP (1914 - 1975) (President 196l - 1964) When Tom Bartrop died on 25th April 1975 whilst staying with friends in Malvern the Essex Field Club lost one of its most worthy members. He was truly an Essex man, having spent all his early life in Margaretting and he loved its countryside, its flora and fauna. He was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, and in 1931, when he left, he joined the staff of the Public Health Department at Chelmsford. During the Second World War he served in the R.A.M.C. in this Country and in East Africa. On returning home in 1946 he resumed his duties in Local Government, being appointed Chief Health Inspector in 1961. The same year he was elected to the Council of the Royal Society of Health and was its Chairman in 1972 and 1973. In October 1959 he was one of the representatives of the Club on the Committee of the newly formed Essex Naturalists' Trust and was its first Secretary. Tom Bartrop gave his services to the Field Club as a member of the Council and as Meetings Secretary. From 1961 to 1964 he was President. In 1974, on the re-organization of Local Government he retired from his post as Chief Health Inspector. He had hoped to devote more time to the Essex Naturalists' Trust and resume his active interest in the Field Club,
