This ice melted temporarily and deposited large quantities of sand and gravel, the Chelmsford Gravels, in the Chelmsford, Danbury and Tiptree areas. The ice then surged again and penetrated the valleys cut in the Hanningfield Till, particularly south-east of Chelmsford, but did not over- ride the hills made up of the Till. The deposit of this third ice advance is known as the Springfield Till, which now blankets the county north of the A12 trunk road and occurs in certain valleys south of that road.
