18. recorder, and is not found on reel to reel machines. Expensive recorders have gadgets to try and remove it. The "Dolbi" system is the best but very expensive. Other points to note: get one with a battery level indicator as batteries do not last long if used for playback at high volumes. If you leave the recorder on after the end of the cassette has been reached the tape will stretch. The thinner C120 tapes (that last one hour each side) can break. Cassette tapes are near impossible to mend. An auto-stop device prevents this. If I were to buy another machine it would have a revolution counter fitted so that it is easy to find one's place on long tapes on playback. Reel to reel machines have these as standard. Lastly a note on cassettes. These are cheap, especially if you shop around or join with a friend and buy them in bulk. Tapes do get tangled or sometimes break so make sure the two halves of the cassette are screwed together. Glued or welded cassettes are almost impossible to repair.
