10. In total over a period of nine days I recorded 49 species of birds, not a good "twitchers" total but with a few species either rare or unusual, enough to make some enjoyable days birdwatching. M. HANSON ---oOo--- OAK LEAVES by LISA ROWLEY Each leaf has a thousand specks. The leaves have rigid edges and shaggy tears. The stem is thick and bold, A split enters the bottom of it And spoils the strong hold. To my eyes it is an umbrella But only a tramp could possess such a creation as this. The crackling sounds like bacon on the fry. The veins are out of order And they carry no more refreshment, The buds are dead they shall never grow As tall as their fellow leaves. The back of the leaves have some white Which looks like some freshly torn skin Or some skinny milk. The veins get thinner and look like a trail made by army troops, The number of the troops die off every minute And leave behind a thinner trail. (Lisa comes from a Walthamstow School. This was written whilst she was looking at the fallen leaves of last Autumn, near the Suntrap Field Centre.) ---oOo---
