9. THAMES SAILING BARGE "DAWN" acquired by Passmore Edwards Museum The "Dawn" is a Thames sailing barge built at Maldon, Essex, in 1897. She was built as a "stackie" by Walter Cook and Arthur Woodard at Bath Wall Yard for Mr. James Keeble of Cross Road, Maldon, who was a local straw merchant and barge owner. She remained in the Keeble family until after the 1914-1918 War, being used to take cargoes of straw from Essex into London, often returning with a cargo of manure. Other cargoes included flour and timber. The "Dawn" was sold to Francis and Gilders Ltd. of Colchester and finished her working life as a sailing barge carrying general cargoes.
