10. sailing barges were replaced by steel motor- driven craft, the "Dawn" was de-masted and used as a timber-yard lighter. In 1966 she was acquired by Mr. G. Swift who refitted her and converted her for chartering. In January 1979 she was purchased for her historic interest by the Passmore Edwards Museum and it is the intention of the Museum Governors that she be preserved in a sea- worthy conditions. Her acquisition was made possible by the provision of Government Funds through the Science Museum matched by a sum especially made available by the London Borough of Newham from the proceeds of its Municipal Lottery. The Skipper continues to be Mr. Gordon Swift who has been with the "Dawn" since 1966. The barge will be used by children of Newham for Education/Recreational purposes and will also be available for charters by members of the public. It is licensed for 12 passengers.
