18 NORTH WEST ESSEX DEER SURVEY A group of Field Club members has joined forces with the local Peer Society group to study the distribution of deer in the Saffron Walden area - the only part of the county where four species of deer are known to be breeding (Red, Roe, Fallow, Muntjac). The Red deer are especially interesting as the herd (twenty animals at least) seems to have established a pattern of rutting and wintering in one wood and then moving in spring to another wood where the calves are born. Last year two of the regular survey meetings in these two woods were thrown open to Field Club members. Not everyone saw deer, but some had excellent views including a large group of red deer. This year there are meetings in June and October - see your programme card for details. Please note that the organiser's phone number is Saffron Walden 22680 - the programme card gives an incorrect number in the June meeting details
