26 OCTOBER 198l 20th October BLACK REDSTART. An interesting record from an Ingatestone garden. M.T.P. ROOK SURVEY 1979 - 1980 A total of 107 records of ROOKERIES have now been received. The last survey was held in 1966 when nearly every part of Essex was visited. The records received for 1979/1980 do not enable any conclusions to be drawn as so many parts of the county have not been covered. These records are now going to be compared with the 1966 survey; in particular records from the same map references can be directly compared, and also a note of the kind of trees in which Rooks build can be summarised. One very large Rookery, and a very well established one is at Wintry Wood, Thorn Wood, Lower Forest. TL 481037. This Rookery has about l60 nests, mainly Oak, and some Horn Beam. It is a very difficult Rookery to count. In 1966 this Rookery had over 90 nests, so probably this is one Rookery that has flourished. I would like to thank all members who have sent me records for 198l, and also those who have sent me Rookery records. Mike Parker. Will anyone who knows the present whereabouts of the Essex Field Club exhibition boards please contact me immediately. Tony Boniface Tel: Chelmsford 66316.
