21 SOILS IN NORTH-EAST ESSEX+ The latest publication on Essex soils from the Soil Survey of England and Wales deals with the Tendring District* to the east of Colchester and describes in detail the soils of the 100 square kilometres of O.S. 1:25,000 sheet TM 12 (Weeley). This district lies outside the Chalky Boulder Clay area and so deals with soils derived from London Clay and a range of glacial and post-glacial debris from outwash and terrace gravels to sub loam and marine alluvium. As well as providing a wealth of descriptive and analytical data for some 20 soil types there are also sections on landscape, geology, vegetation, climate and patterned ground. The book is illustrated by a range of photographs and line drawings and is accompanied by a detailed soil map and a land use capability map, both in colour at a scale of 1:25,000 (21/2" to 1 mile). This publication may be obtained through the library service or direct from the Soil Survey of England and Wales, Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpendon, Hertfordshire. * Reference. R. G. Ron Allen REPORTS OF MEETINGS Joint Field Meeting to Foulness, Wakering Stairs, Sunday 21st February, 1982 Sunday morning was beautifully sunny with a clear blue sky. What spoilt it was a wind from the east that cut through one's coat and numbed the fingers.
