12 specimen, the thickness of the shells from the outer shell inwards were:- 2 mm clear ice (4 mm at a 'wart') , 3 mm white ice, 2 mm grey ice, 2 mm white ice, 4 mm clear ice and 1 mm grey ice to the centre. The other specimen was similar but the inner- most 5 mm radius was clear ice. There were hailstorms in many places in Essex that afternoon with up to 25 mm diameter hailstones but an attempt was made to define the area of this particular fall of large hailstones by motoring along lanes and recording evidence of damage on a map. Small twigs and bunches of leaves stripped from the trees completely carpeted the road- way where there were trees to the south or west. A random selection of twigs from those peting one road revealed:- oak - up to 500 mm long and 10 mm diameter at the break point willow - up to 600 mm long and 8 mm diameter at the break point
