48 BIRD GROUP MEETING, HEYBRIDGE GRAVEL PITS 18TH AUGUST, 1985 This meeting was a repeat of the Bird Group first visit last year, which had proved so popular. Before leaving the car park we watched a vast number of Sand Martins circling a tree, presumably collecting prior to migrating, a pleasing sight in a year when Sand Martins have been quite hard to find. Fortunately the day was reasonably fine so that the 16 members present were able to enjoy the walk along the sea wall in comfort. A total of 51 species was seen: the flooded pits being more productive than the estuary itself on this occasion. We were fortunate to be able to compare Little, Common and Arctic Terns as well as Ringed and Little Ringed Plover. The latter refused to land
