Deer have been involved in accidents on both motorways, but to date there has been no major accident attributed to deer. In my opinion it is only a matter of time before someone is killed in such an accident. Even where the motorways are fenced they will not stop deer and in many areas there is no deer fencing at all. Stansted Airport Some years ago there was a problem with deer encroaching on to the airport from surrounding areas. Some culling and additional fencing appears to have solved that problem. However, it must be kept in mind as the airport expands. Deer are remarkably tolerant to aircraft noise as visitors to Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk can vouch. Deer graze just outside the perimeter fence at the end of the runway as U.S.A.F. jets take off and land. In conclusion, I have every faith that fallow and muntjac will be able to cope quite adequately with the problems we create, so long as we leave some suitable habitat. Red and roe are in a more delicate position, but I am confident they will expand slowly but will never match the spread of fallow and muntjac.
